At the 2024 Fall Commencement Ceremony, held on Friday, August 22, at Snowflake Square Hall, a total of 1,191 Sookmyung students received their diplomas. Despite the sweltering summer heat, professors, families, and friends joined to celebrate the graduates’ new beginnings.
The undergraduate commencement in the morning, hosted by Prof. Yang Seungchan, Dean of Academic Affairs, was attended by President Moon Si-yeun, Alumnae Association President Kim Kyung-hee, academic deans and directors, and other distinguished guests. Among the 806 undergraduates who earned their degrees, Yoon So-Young (IT Engineering) received the Chairperson’s Award, Yoon Jo-hyun (Child Welfare & Studies) received the Dean’s Award, and Jung Ah-young (Mechanical Systems Engineering) was honored with the Alumnae Association President’s Award.
In her congratulatory address, President Moon emphasized, “As Sookmyung approaches its 120th anniversary next year, its history is one of courage in never giving up and of constant challenge. Now, you are the ones who will carry that spirit forward.”
She added, “In this era of massive transformation—marked by the evolution of AI, economic uncertainty, and a complex international order—future competitiveness will come from the power to define problems and the ability to solve them together with others.” She urged graduates to ‘envision themselves five or ten years from now and design today with that future in mind’, ‘uphold values and principles to stay centered’, ‘create a brighter world through empathy and communication’, and
‘challenge paths not taken without fear.
President Moon also remarked, “Learning at Sookmyung is not the completion of knowledge but the beginning of responsibility. Leadership that stands on the side of justice, embraces the vulnerable, and does not exclude others for being different will make the name ‘Sookmyung’ shine even brighter.”
In the afternoon, the graduate school commencement followed, with 385 students receiving degrees: 34 doctoral degrees, 98 master’s degrees from the Graduate School, 167 master’s degrees from the Graduate School of Professional Studies, and 86 master’s degrees from the Graduate School of Education.
The Alumnae Association President’s Award, given to students with outstanding academic and thesis achievements, went to Cho Hye-jin Cho (Health Industry). Excellence in Thesis Awards were presented to eight students from the Graduate School, seven from the Graduate School of Professional Studies, and six from the Graduate School of Education.
Though the heat of late summer lingered, the campus remained quite lively on the commencement day. Graduates in caps and gowns filled the main gate, Sunheon Square, and other corners of the campus, wearing expressions of both bittersweet nostalgia and eager anticipation as they turned their final moments at Sookmyung into lasting memories.
Lee So-young Lee (Statistics, Class of 2021) said, “I was sorry that I wasn’t able to fully enjoy campus life since I entered during the COVID-19 pandemic. I hope juniors won’t simply aim for graduation, but take time to reflect on what they can gain from each and every moment in their college life.” Park Seo-Young (TESL, Class of 2021) commented, “Now that I’m stepping out from the shelter of the Sookmyung campus, graduation is beginning to feel real.”
