Sookmyung Women’s University earned the highest ratings across all evaluated criteria in the “2025 University Innovation Support Program’s Competency Evaluation,” supported by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea. The university received an “S” rating in the Education Innovation Competency category and an “A” rating in the Institutional Competency Management category, the top rating in both areas.
In particular, the university achieved an S rating in the former for two consecutive years. As a result, Sookmyung has secured approximately KRW 3.8 billion in additional incentives, bringing the total budget for this year to KRW 7.6 billion.
In the Education Innovation Competency category, the university established “WISE+UP” as its education innovation strategy, aligned with its mid- to long-term development plan, while building a flexible, student-centered academic system. High marks were awarded for measures such as academic system reforms to expand students’ choice of majors; reinforcement of student support systems to enhance campus life; and a broader collection of feedback from faculty, staff, and students to drive innovative education. Another key achievement the evaluation highlighted was the promotion of multiple majors to expand academic choice and advance customized education innovation tailored to individual students.
In line with the Ministry of Education’s core policy of broadening admission units, the university also took a leading role in implementing autonomous major-based admissions through the Division of Liberal Studies and the Division of Advanced Engineering. Sookmyung introduced support and major exploration programs to help students admitted under the Free-Major Selection System adapt, while continuing efforts to enhance student satisfaction by operating campus adaptation programs based on life stages of all students. The university also received positive evaluations for presenting a phased project implementation plan to protect foundational disciplines and respect academic diversity.
In the Institutional Competency Management category, the university was recognized for its excellence in operating the Nationally Funded Project Performance Management Committee to prevent overlapping investments among government-funded projects, as well as in establishing and operating a data-driven performance management system. In particular, improvements to the second-cycle autonomy indicators, shifting the focus toward outcome-based indicators, were cited as a plus for overall performance management.
Building on these achievements, Sookmyung Women’s University plans to further enhance institutional competitiveness in the third cycle of the University Innovation Support Program. The school will also support student development through the establishment of a data- and AI-based integrated support portal, SNOWISE, with the goal of nurturing future-oriented, interdisciplinary talent as a leading institution in education innovation.
President Moon Si-yeon stated, “This achievement reflects recognition of the dedication and efforts of all members of the university in stabilizing the Free-Major Selection System, advancing education innovation, and strengthening institutional performance management. The university will continue to lead education innovation through data-driven feedback systems and pursue future-oriented challenges under the vision of ‘Outthinkers Sookmyung.’”
The University Innovation Support Program is a financial support measure by the Ministry of Education, designed to strengthen institutional capacity through autonomous innovation and to cultivate talent needed for future society. A total of 138 general universities nationwide are participating in the program.
