A research team from the Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering has been selected for the “2025 Global Basic Research Laboratory Program” supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and the National Research Foundation of Korea.

The government-funded initiative is designed to strengthen national basic research and foster outstanding researchers by supporting small-scale group research projects. Of the 996 projects evaluated in the main review this year, 103 were selected, reflecting a selection rate of 10.3 percent.

The research team, led by Professor Shim Joo-yong as principal researcher and joined by Chair Professor Kim Yoon-young, Professor Na Young-jin, and Professor Lee Ki-wook of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Chung-Ang University, was selected for the exploratory track under the theme “Sono-Fusion Laboratory for Deep Muscle Monitoring.” The team will receive approximately KRW 1.5 billion in research funding over the course of three years through May 2028 to carry out the project.

The research aims to utilize Sono-Fusion technology for ultrasound-based deep muscle monitoring and to implement the technology as an integrated electromechanical system. Sono-Fusion is a technology that precisely integrates multiple biosensors, including wearable ultrasound sensors, electromyography (EMG), and inertial measurement units (IMU), enabling real-time, high-resolution analysis of deep muscle contractions and physiological responses.

Through this project, the research team plans to develop technologies capable of meticulously monitoring deep muscle physiological information and to significantly enhance the accuracy and efficiency of musculoskeletal analysis through AI-based biomechanical modeling.

Professor Shim stated, “With this selection for the Global Basic Research Laboratory Program, the team aims to secure international leadership in precision muscle monitoring technologies that integrate mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and biomedical engineering, while opening up new application possibilities in the fields of rehabilitation, sports, and robotics.”
