Sookmyung Women’s University has achieved notable success in the field of technology commercialization, effectively linking university research outcomes with industrial applications. According to the 2025 University Information Disclosure data, the university ranked 17th nationwide (excluding branch campuses) in total technology transfer revenue. In the same year, it placed 4th in technology transfer income per science and engineering faculty member in the JoongAng Ilbo university rankings, demonstrating a strong upward trajectory. Marking the 10th anniversary of its College of Engineering, the university plans to further strengthen its research competitiveness and expand its commercialization infrastructure.
According to the 2025 disclosure data, Sookmyung recorded approximately KRW 1.75 billion in technology transfer revenue, representing an increase of about 240% compared to the previous year (KRW 510 million). Among women’s universities, it ranked first, with a gap of nearly twofold compared to the second-ranked institution.
In the 2025 JoongAng Ilbo comprehensive university evaluation, the university reported KRW 24.48 million in technology transfer income per science and engineering faculty member, placing it 4th overall. On the strength of these achievements, Sookmyung entered the top 20 in overall rankings for the first time since 2019.
A representative example of the university’s technology commercialization is its development of smart farm technologies utilizing renewable energy. These innovations aim to increase crop yields by improving growing conditions while employing environmentally sustainable energy sources.
The university is also advancing the commercialization of customized nanocoating technologies designed to enhance the functionality of outdoor products. In collaboration with a camping brand, Sookmyung is developing nanoparticle coatings that provide hydrophilic, hydrophobic, antibacterial, and flame-retardant properties.
Leveraging the strengths of a women’s university, Sookmyung has also incorporated women’s life-cycle considerations into its technological initiatives. One such example is the development of nutritionally tailored snack products in collaboration with a food-tech startup. These granola bar products are designed to address nutritional deficiencies specific to different stages of women’s lives, including pregnancy and lactation.
These achievements are attributed to the university’s sustained efforts to enhance research competitiveness following the establishment of its College of Engineering. Large-scale investments and the recruitment of distinguished faculty have contributed significantly to its technology transfer performance.
In addition, the university has strengthened its intellectual property management system through its Technology Commercialization Center under the Research & Business Development Foundation. Improvements have been made across the entire patent process—from application to registration and maintenance—along with increased patent-related funding. As a result, Prof. Shin Ji-young, head of the foundation, received a commendation from the Commissioner of the Korean Intellectual Property Office at the “2025 Intellectual Property Commercialization Conference.”
Building on these accomplishments, Sookmyung aims to sustain its growth in technology commercialization. The Technology Commercialization Center stated that it plans to expand activities in key areas such as AI convergence, biohealth and environmental technologies, semiconductors, and future mobility, while reinforcing a virtuous cycle in which technology licensing revenues are reinvested into research. Through these efforts, the university seeks to establish a sustainable technology commercialization ecosystem for its next century.
