Sookmyung Women's University has established a cutting-edge 700-square-meter laboratory, a crucial asset for its transition into a research-oriented institution.

Part of the Office of Research, the Joint Equipment Operation Center hosted an opening ceremony for the new facility of Experimental Animal Laboratory on Monday, July 29 at 11:30 a.m. in the basement of the Social Education Building.

The event was attended by President Yunkeum Chang, Vice President Jongsung Park, Director Yonghwan Kim, and other prominent university members. Following the ceremony, attendees toured the lab to explore its features.

The Experimental Animal Laboratory occupies the second basement (252 m²) and third basement (347.6 m²) levels of the Social Education Building, encompassing a total area of approximately 600 m². Over KRW 6 billion has been invested in the facility's construction and the installation of advanced machinery and equipment.

Designed for testing small animals such as mice and rats, the Experimental Animal Laboratory features 33 specialized spaces including breeding rooms, laboratories, necropsy labs, and operating rooms.  An individual ventilation system (IVC Rack system) has been implemented throughout to optimize space utilization and maintain a clean environment, reducing the risk of cross infections.

This new animal laboratory is anticipated to significantly enhance the university's ability to leverage state-of-the-art research equipment, acquired through recent initiatives to bolster basic science research and infrastructure.

"The newly constructed clean laboratory provides a space for conducting advanced research," stated Mr. Yonghwan Kim, the center's director. "It presents an opportunity for Sookmyung Women's University to evolve into a research-centered university,” he added.
