Jundong Park, a professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, has been named the first recipient of the Asia Pacific Society of Rheology (APSR) "2026 Opal Medal." Established this year, the award recognizes outstanding research and academic contributions to rheology* across the Asia-Pacific region.

*Rheology: a branch of physical science that studies the deformation and flow of matter.

The APSR recognized Park for his work in non-linear rheology and structure-property relations. The society noted that his research—spanning colloidal gels, particle-level dynamics, bulk rheological property analysis, and process applications such as lithium-ion battery electrode slurries—connects diverse scales and methodologies, offering a key framework for understanding the fundamental mechanisms behind rheological properties.

The Korean Society of Rheology called the honor "a significant achievement that demonstrates the strength of Korea's rheology research on the international stage."

The award ceremony took place at the APSR Workshop 2026 in Osaka, Japan, on June 5. Park delivered an award lecture outlining the key findings of his research on non-linear rheology and structure-property relations, along with their potential applications.

Park credited his students and collaborators for the honor. "I will continue to investigate the structure-property relationships of complex fluids and soft matter and expand this work to advance cutting-edge materials and process technologies," he said.
